Hero's Biography 54[1]

Agnes Digital was an American-bred, Japanese-trained racehorse that was active from 1999 to 2003. Known for his performances on both dirt and turf in both domestic and international races, Japanese fans gave him the nickname "Weirdo" (変態), due to his unusual selection of races and victories.

Name Origin

Crown name "Agnes" from owner Takao Watanabe.

Racing career

Before debut

While on a trip to Kentucky in the United States, trainer Toshiaki Shirai found Agnes Digital at a local breeder's farm known as Runnymede Farm in Paris, Kentucky. Agnes Digital was a small and thin horse, causing local breeders to ask the trainer why he chose him to bring to Japan. Shirai replied "I looked at 60 horses, but this one I liked the most."

2 year old season (1999)

On September 12th, Agnes Digital would begin his career in a Newcomer debut race at Hanshin Racecourse over 1400 meters on dirt, but would finish a distant 2nd place. He would have his maiden win a month later over 1200 meters dirt, before running again a week later in the Momiji Stakes, a 1200 meter race over turf. Due to the short turnaround and change in surface, Digital would finish way off in 8th place. Digital would run again on November 7th in the Mochinoki Sho allowance race, but would finish 2nd for his 3rd defeat in 4 races.

Not satisfied with his riding, Trainer Shirai would take Yuichi Fukunaga off the mount and asked veteran jockey Hitoshi Matoba to become Digital's main jockey. Matoba, worried about how thin Agnes Digital was, said "I wonder if he'll be ok to run, having such a weak body." On November 27th, Digital would win an allowance race by 7 lengths in his first race with jockey Matoba. After the race, Matoba commented. "He's not the real deal yet, and I look forward to when he continues to grow."

On December 23rd, Agnes Digital would win his final race of the year in the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun, an NAR race at Kawasaki Racecourse. It was his first graded stakes win.

Retirement

Breeding career

After his retirement, Agnes Digital moved to Big Red Farm to begin his stallion career, with his first crop debuting in 2007. Agnes Digital had modest success as a stallion, producing graded winners on both turf and dirt just like himself:

  • Yamanin Kingly (2009 Sapporo Kinen, 2011 Sirius Stakes)
  • Daishin Orange (2010 Antares Stakes, 2011 Heian Stakes)
  • Kazenoko (2014 Japan Dirt Derby)

After being pensioned as a stallion, he would move and live out the rest of his life at Tokachi Light Horse Agricultural Cooperative Association Stud Farm in 2020. Agnes Digital would pass away on December 8th, 2021 at 24 years old, due to an accident while grazing.
