Durandal was a Japanese racehorse that was active from 2001 to 2005. Known for his difficult temperament and an exciting racing style in sprint races, many fans referred to him as the "The Holy Sword of the Turf" (ターフの聖剣 Turf no Seiken).[2]
Name Origin
His name is based on the legendary sword of French epic literature, Durendal, the sword of Roland in "The Song of Roland". According to legend, the sword was able to cut through giant boulders with a single strike, and was indestructible.[3]
