Skills are a game mechanic in Umamusume: Pretty Derby that can be learned by trainees and take effect during races. They usually give the trainee a stat increase, or opponent racers a stat decrease. These effects often have varying requirements needed to activate them; for example, some skills are restricted to certain running styles and track distances. Trainees with higher wit also have a higher chance of activating beneficial skills.

How to Obtain

All skills (with the exception of the trainee's Unique skill and Detrimental skills) must be purchased before a race or at the end of a career run with skill points (also known as SP) in order to be used. For a skill to be available for purchase, at least one hint for the particular skill must be acquired during gameplay, or the trainee must naturally possess availability for the skill or unlock it through raising their potential. Typical methods for acquiring skill hints include support card events, scenario events, and inspiration. For each skill hint obtained, the skill points necessary to purchase the skill will decrease by ~8% to a maximum of 40% off of the base price. Obtaining the condition Fast Learner will decrease all skill cost by an additional 10%.

Skill Types

Standard Skills

Unique Powerful skills unique to each trainee. They can be leveled up by satisfying conditions before certain events or by uncapping a trainee. Weaker forms of unique skills can be inherited by other trainees through inspiration.
Speed Increases current speed
Acceleration Increases acceleration
Recovery Recovers stamina
Starting Gate Increases proficiency at exiting the starting gates
Lane Change Increases speed when changing lanes
Observation Increases field of view, which improves the efficacy of debuff skills and a trainee's capacity for positioning

Passive Skills

Passive Skills provide a flat stat increase and are activated automatically at the start of the race. These skills are capable of breaking the scenario stat cap.

Icon Type Effect When Activated
Speed Increases base speed
Stamina Increases base stamina
Power Increases base power
Guts Increases base guts
Wit Increases base wit, may also increase field of view
All-Rounder Increases more than one base stat

Debuff Skills impair opponent racers. As such, these skills do not affect other trainees on the same team during team races. The effects of debuff skills can stack.

Icon Type Effect When Activated
Speed Lowers the speed of other racers
Acceleration Lowers the acceleration of other racers
Stamina Lowers the stamina of other racers
Observation Reduces the field of view of other racers

Detrimental Skills

These skills are obtained from placing 6th or lower in races, or other specific events. In order to be removed, these skills must be purchased with SP. Detrimental skills are either passive or can be activated during a race, the latter of which can be triggered multiple times per race.

Passive Detrimentals

Starting Gate A negative effect occurs at the start of the race

Skill Upgrades

Some skills have purchasable upgrades. These skills are marked with a circle, ○, which changes to a double circle, ◎, to indicate the upgraded version.

Gold skills are skill upgrades obtainable if the original skill has already been purchased and a skill hint for the gold skill has been acquired. When unlocking a gold skill, the original skill can be purchased as well, even if no hints have been obtained for it.

At the end of a run, it is possible to upgrade up to four compatible gold skills into evolved skills if trainee- or scenario-specific conditions have been met. Up to two of these skills can be trainee-specific, with the remaining two skills being scenario-specific.
