Umamusume (ウマ娘, Umamusume, lit. horse girl) are a race of horse kemonomimi and the main focus of the Umamusume franchise.

Profile

Umamusume are humanoid beings with horse-like ears and tails. They inherit the names, souls, and some characteristics of racehorses from our world.

In the world of Umamusume, Umamusume completely replace the existence of horses throughout history. Some equestrian terminology, such as "filly", still exist in this world, but other colloquial phrases, such as the English "horsing around", do not exist.

Relationship with humans

The beginnings of the relationship between humans and Umamusume are unknown, but by hints in both the anime and in Cinderella Gray, it dates back as long as the humans themselves.

In Japan, Umamusume are highly popular figures, mainly because of the racing scene. A successful Umamusume athlete is treated as a celebrity, and Umamusume themselves are seen to be able to run on walkways and even have routes designated for them. Some of their routes even have speed limits.

Characteristics

Horse-Like Features

Every Umamusume has the ears of a horse, rather than humanoid ears. These ears are coated with short, fine fur. They also have tails of long hair. Both of these features tend to be the same coloration as an Umamusume's head hair.

Enhanced Strength and Speed

Umamusume have legs that are structured similarly to humans', but contain considerably more power. This gives them a "superhuman running ability", and allows them to run at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour and kick with incredible force. According to Agnes Tachyon, the muscles of an Umamusume are inexplicably strong, despite generally having low mass. She also states that the speed of an Umamusume is "almost unrivalled in the natural world."

Unisexuality

All Umamusume are born female, and there are no male members of the species. This makes Umamusume a unisexual species. Umamusume do appear to give mammalian birth to other Umamusume, but the species' exact method of reproduction is unknown.

Trivia

• The fathers of Umamusume are a secret.
• The gender of the original horse an Umamusume is based off is reflected by where they wear their hair accessories. Umamusume based on male horses have an accessory on their right ear, while horse girls based on female horses will have an accessory on/near their left.
• When using a smartphone for receiving calls and vice versa, an Umamusume never sticks it next to their ear but instead places it in front of them, possibly using a speaker or camera function of their phone. They also have fixed phones with longer handsets to fit their head.
