In front of a large machine dances a single girl. Her cheerful voice rings throughout the room, and her tail sways in rhythm with her nimble dance steps. I find myself lost in her bright smile—

"Hey! Cheer me on too, okay?"

I feel my heart jump out of my chest. In the next instant, I realize that both her wink and words just now were directed at me.

"And to finish it off, a turn... and a V for victory! Yay, a new high score!"

The machine displays an unbelievably impressive score, and the crowd goes wild. I clap along as well.

"Thanks for cheering me on, everyone! ...Whoa, it's already this late? Let's all meet at the racetrack next time, okay? The mighty Teio will give you a show you won't forget! And with that, I'll take my leave!"

True to her word, the girl abruptly runs out the door. Yet even long after she's gone, the image of her smile is still etched into my mind.

That was probably the moment I became a fan of this little emperor—Tokai Teio.

筐体の前で踊る彼女。
快活でよく通る声。
軽やかなダンスに合わせ揺れる尻尾。
そして、はじけるような笑顔――

「――ねぇ！　キミも応援して！」

――心臓が跳ねた。
直後、そのウインクと言葉が、
自分に向けられたものだと知る。

「最後はターンで～、ブイっ！
いぇーい！　ハイスコア～！」

神がかったスコアが表示され、
ギャラリーが沸き、私も思わず拍手する。

「みんな、応援ありがと～！
……っと、もうこんな時間かぁ。
じゃあ、次はレース会場で会おうね！」

「このテイオー様が、今日よりも～っと
ワクワクさせてあげるから！
――ってなわけで、バイバーイ！」

そう言って、走り去る彼女。
その姿が見えなくなっても、
私の瞳にはその笑顔が焼きついていた。

……多分、この時から私はもう、
小さな“帝王”の
ファンになっていたんだと思う――
