Horsebutch/sandbox is a Japanese racehorse notable for being the first Japanese-trained horse to win a major race in Europe.
Name Origin
Seeking the Pearl's name is derived from her sire, Seeking the Gold. Her owner's (Masako Uenaka) birthstone was a pearl, so she chose the name
Racing career
Two-year-old season (1996)
Seeking the Pearl began her career on July 20th, 1996 at Kokura over 1200 meters on turf. She was the favorite, and came in first, 7 lengths away from the second place finisher Tenzan Osuzu. In her next start, she was moved up in class to the G3 Niigata Sansai Stakes, but jockey Yutaka Take nearly fell off of her coming out of the gate, causing her to fall back to the very back of the pack. In the end, she made a late surge but failed to take the lead, coming in third behind Shinko Splendor and Personality One. Two and a half months later, she was entered in the Daily Hai Sansai Stakes and displayed a dominating victory, finishing five lengths in front of the colt Mejiro Bright. In her last start of the season, Seeking the Pearl raced in the G1 Hanshin Sansai Himba Stakes against a small field of ten. She raced near the front up until the fourth corner, upon which she panicked and slowed down, finishing fourth, four and a half lengths away from Mejiro Dober.

Retirement
Seeking the Pearl retired in late 1999 after a short series of unsuccessful bids in American stakes races. She became a broodmare at Claiborne, and later Lanes' End Farm, producing three foals - two fillies and a colt, the latter of whom was Seeking the Dia, a prominent dirt racer in Japan.
Seeking the Pearl died suddenly on June 10th, 2005 at Lanes' End Farm after being struck by lightning. At the time of her death, she was carrying a foal by Giant's Causeway.
