Deemed both a commercial and critical success, the film returns both [[wikipedia:Tom Cruise|Tom Cruise]] in the starring role as [[wikipedia:Pete "Maverick" Mitchell|Pete "Maverick" Mitchell]], now a captain, as well as [[wikipedia:Val Kilmer|Val Kilmer]] as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky – Kilmer's final role before his death in 2025. 

In Japan, Paramount and Cygames announced a promotional collaboration with ''Umamusume'', naming [[Mayano Top Gun]], whose namesake horse was named in part after the original 1986 movie, as a special advertising pilot.
