Yukino Bijin is a Japanese racehorse that was active between the years 1992 and 1993.

Name Origin

"Yukino" means "of the snow", and "Bijin" means "beautiful lady". She was popular among female fans and was called a good looking horse.[1]

Racing career

Two-year-old season (1992)

Yukino Bijin made her debut on August 10th, 1992, in a 850-meter dirt race on Morioka Racecourse in Iwate. She won her debut, and continued to run in short-distance dirt races until her Three-year-old season. This is because her owner, Yukikatsu Arai, wanted to race her in Iwate dirt races until she could transition to central racing in her Three-year-old season once stables opened up[2]. Her only loss in Iwate was in the Nambukoma Sho, where she placed 5th to Ebisu Sakura.

Three-year-old season (1993)

She transferred to central racing and won the Crocus Stakes, her first turf race, on February 27th, 1993. On April 11th, she entered the Oka Sho, the first leg of the Triple Tiara. She began to accelerate, but could not reach Vega and placed 2nd[3]. A month later on May 23rd, in the following race, the Japanese Oaks, she would once again place 2nd to Vega. While there were originally plans to have her race in the Radio Nikkei Sho (G3) after the Oaks, it was decided to have her rest until the fall[4].

In the fall, Yukino Bijin entered the Queen Stakes (G3) on October 3rd as the favorite. She beat Hokuto Vega by two lengths, making this race her first and only graded stakes victory. After this, she entered the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on November 14th, the final leg of the Triple Tiara at the time.[Note 1] She placed tenth, the lowest placement in her career, and lost to Hokuto Vega. After her loss, she won the open-class Turquoise Stakes on December 18th, which was her final race, and would beat Hokuto Vega once again. However, due to a fracture in her left front leg[5], she was deregistered from the Japan Racing Association in September of 1994, and became a broodmare at Murata Farm.

Retirement

Yukino Bijin retired as a broodmare at Murata Farm. Over the span of fifteen years, she produced twelve foals, though none achieved significant success in local or central racing. However, due to weak hooves and the strain pregnancy placed on her legs, she retired from broodmare duties in 2010 and continued to live her remaining years as a meritorious horse.[6]

Yukino Bijin later passed away due to acute heart failure on July 22nd, 2016. A monument in her honor was established at Yushun Memorial Park in spring of 2018[7].
